Jürgen Klopp is about to get a very different look at his Germany squad.
After using his first group for matches against the Netherlands (draw) and Greece (loss), Klopp will turn to a largely new group for Germany’s next two Nations League fixtures. Germany will host Serbia in Munich on October 1st before traveling to Thessaloniki for the return meeting with Greece on October 4th.
The biggest storyline might be Florian Wirtz. The Liverpool attacker is the most established attacking talent in this group, and Klopp will have a chance to build the attack around him. Wirtz should have plenty of freedom to influence games, particularly with several energetic young players surrounding him.
Then there is Aleksandar Pavlović. The Bayern Munich midfielder is included in this second squad, and his ability to control possession and play through pressure could make him an important piece of Klopp’s midfield. Tom Bischof, who moved from the U-21 squad, also gives Germany another Bayern Munich option and another opportunity for Klopp to evaluate the club’s young talent.
Jonas Urbig is another obvious player to watch. With Manuel Neuer retired and Marc-André ter Stegen in the first squad, Urbig represents one of the most intriguing long-term goalkeeping options available to Germany. Noah Atubolu and Finn Dahmen will provide competition.
There are potential breakthroughs elsewhere, too. Finn Jeltsch, Saïd El Mala, Felix Keidel, Derry Scherhant and Mika Baur could all push for minutes, while Jonathan Burkardt and Nick Woltemade give Klopp two different options at striker.
After the disappointing loss to Greece, Klopp now has another opportunity to experiment, develop his younger players and, perhaps most importantly, find a response.
