The Miami Dolphins are trading quarterback Quinn Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars, swapping late round picks in the 2028 NFL Draft in the deal. The trade was first reported by ESPN and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.
Ewers was selected by Miami in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Texas. He spent much of his rookie season as the third-string quarterback, but he moved into the starting role late in the season when the Dolphins benched quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. He threw
for 622 yards on a 66.3 percent completion rate with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He appeared in four games during the season, starting three of them.
Miami cut Tagovailoa this offseason, then signed free agent Malik Willis as his replacement. Ewers was expected to assume the second-string position, but his play early in training camp and the preseason was underwhelming. He sustained a groin injury during the first preseason game against the Washington Commanders and, while he finished his time in that game, he was sidelined for about a week. He did not play in the second preseason game because of the injury and was held out in last night’s preseason finale as well.
The trade comes a day before the league’s 53-man regular-season roster limit is enforced, dropping from the preseason 90-man limit. Miami has Willis, Cam Miller, and Mark Gronowski at quarterback, but neither Miller nor Gronowski has instilled confidence in their ability to serve as Willis’s backup. The Dolphins will likely be active on the waiver wire and in talks with free agent quarterbacks to join the team and provide a solid option if Willis is injured.
