With the game against the Las Vegas Raiders ending the way it did, it can be easy to overlook some of the positives that came from the matchup. This was a game that the New Orleans Saints can learn a lot from, especially when it comes to closing out games. However, one player showed up and performed exceptionally well throughout the entire game. Had it not been for his performance, the Saints might not have even been able to take the lead.
First and foremost, let’s acknowledge the fans. It was the home
opener of the season, and the Dome was rocking. The fans remained locked in through all the emotions of the game and kept the pressure on the Raiders. It was beautiful to see the Dome back in action on Sunday.
Game MVP: Chris Olave
Chris Olave was the unquestioned MVP of this game. Through three weeks, Olave is making his case to be the best receiver in the league.
Olave was targeted 13 times, caught nine passes, and finished with 107 receiving yards. He averaged 11.9 yards per reception, and some of those catches were difficult and contested.
So far this season, Olave has 27 receptions, which is tied for first in the NFL; 375 receiving yards, which ranks second in the league; and 36 targets, which is also tied for first. He is averaging 125 receiving yards per game, ranking second in the NFL. Olave also has 20 receptions that have resulted in first downs, which ranks among the league leaders.
He currently has a PFF grade of 90.2, and every week, he continues to prove that his new contract is well worth it.
If the Saints can begin to complement his play with better performances across the team, and Olave can maintain this pace, he will certainly put himself in a position to earn some hardware at the end of the season.
