With the NFL trade deadline just under two weeks away, November 10th, the Arizona Cardinals have some decisions to make.
They are clearly in a transition with their team and roster, and that could mean moving on from high priced veterans that are at the end of their football time.
ESPN came out with their “Ranking the top 25 candidates to move, plus team fits” article and the Arizona Cardinals had two players listed at candidates to be moved.
From ESPN:
3. Josh Sweat, Edge, Arizona Cardinals
What Fowler is hearing: Rival teams could see him
getting moved. “Sweat to Dallas makes a lot of sense to me,” an NFC exec said. “That’s a profile fit.” Rumblings persist that Sweat would want a new contract — he’s in the second year of a four-year, $76 million deal — and that could complicate things. But many teams are looking for an edge rusher.
9. Budda Baker, S, Arizona Cardinals
What Fowler is hearing: A few wins won’t camouflage Arizona’s transitional state — and it needs draft capital to finish the rebuild. Baker, who has seven consecutive Pro Bowls and has 3.5 sacks on the season, could help get the Cardinals some extra picks. Long a favorite in coaching circles, Baker would garner strong interest. He’s owed $16.2 million this year and $17.8 million next year. People I’ve talked to believe the Cardinals should try to get something for Baker.
Trading Sweat at this juncture seems like a forgone conclusion, especially with him being relatively healthy through the first seven weeks of the season after an offseason of no work with the team. So, getting something for Sweat now makes sense.
Baker is a tough one. He is entering the legacy phase of his time in Arizona, where his on field work for a miserable defense isn’t quite as good as it was years ago, but he is still likely their best defensive player (which is another article in itself of why this isn’t good). However, on a team that just needs safety help, he likely would be a major asset. The problem, is a late day two or even worse a day three pick worth moving on?
What are your thoughts?
