For many young players coming through Bayern Munich’s academy, simply sharing the training pitch with the first team can be a career-defining experience. Javier Fernández, who will spend the 2026/27 season on loan at 1. FC Nürnberg, is taking much more than memories with him as he looks to continue his development.
Reflecting on his time around Vincent Kompany’s squad, Fernández offered an insightful look at what separates Bayern Munich from almost everyone else.
“It was incredibly instructive to see
what makes this team so successful. Of course, they have many incredibly good players like Harry Kane, who seemingly never makes a bad pass and scores every shot. But the secret is their attitude: you get the feeling they fight for their lives in every training session. Joshua Kimmich particularly impressed me; he absolutely wants to win every single game – I want to take a page out of his book,” Fernández told Bild’s Nico Linner (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
While Kane’s technical brilliance and clinical finishing understandably stood out, Fernández’s biggest takeaway was not about talent. Instead, it was the relentless mentality that drives Bayern Munich every day. Training sessions are treated with the same intensity as Bundesliga or Champions League matches, creating an environment where complacency simply does not exist.
His comments about Joshua Kimmich will also resonate with some Bayern Munich supporters. For years, Kimmich has been praised for his competitive edge, leadership, and refusal to accept anything less than victory, regardless of whether the match is official or just a training exercise. That mindset has helped establish Bayern Munich’s winning culture across multiple generations of players.
For Fernández, the loan spell at Nürnberg will be about earning minutes and continuing his growth. If he can combine regular playing time with the lessons he absorbed from watching veterans like Kane and Kimmich every day, Bayern Munich could eventually welcome back a more complete, battle-tested midfielder who already understands exactly what it takes to succeed at the club.
