Good morning! As I wrote last night, yesterday’s win against the Royals was subtly important for the Sox. I was looking at things in the context of the team’s recent sluggish play heading into a tough roadtrip. But it was important in another sense: it was their 82nd win, meaning the Red Sox will finish the 2026 season over .500.
Prior to last year’s 89-win campaign, the Sox had failed to reach that mark for three seasons in row, a level of historical ineptitude they had not previously hit in 31 years.
Had the Sox not turned around their season in historic fashion after an ugly start to this campaign, this season would have marked 5 sub-.500 seasons in 7 years, which would’ve been as bad a stretch of baseball that the club has had since before the Impossible Dream season of 1967. In light of the fact that 1967 is sort of looked at as the beginning of the modern period of Red Sox baseball around these parts, that would’ve been unacceptable.
This isn’t exactly cause for popping Champagne (though I’m hardly one to discourage you from livening up your Monday any way you can) but it’s nice to have mathematical confirmation that the dark days are behind us.
Use this space to talk about whatever you want and, as always, be good to one another.
