Newcastle United are again monitoring Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford’s situation ahead of the next transfer window after failing to secure the goalie last summer.
The 23-year-old joined Manchester City from Burnley, choosing the Cityzens over the Magpies in a last-minute plot twist. Too bad for Trafford, he seemingly made the wrong decision as he’s made just three Premier League appearances this season.
Since arriving at the Etihad Stadium, Trafford has faced increased competition following
City’s unexpected move for former PSG goalie Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has established himself as the first-choice option without a doubt in Pep Guardiola’s mind.
Newcastle previously held talks over signing the England Under-21 international before he chose Manchester City, and with Trafford now limited to a secondary role, interest from St James’ Park has resurfaced, according to talkSPORT.
Trafford, meanwhile, acknowledged the challenge of his current situation.
“I didn’t expect the situation [with Donnarumma] to happen but it happened, so just get on with it,” Trafford said. “So it’s happened so I work very hard every day and see what happens, give it my best shot.
“So it is what it is. It’s football, you’ve got to keep grafting every day and the games that come, play as hard as you can. This is just another experience to add to my career and it has been a good learning experience.”
When asked about his future at Manchester City, Trafford left the door open.
“Who knows, it’s football,” Trafford said. “Let’s take it a day at a time and try and work as hard as I can and whatever happens, happens.
“I’ve obviously got a contract, so don’t know what happens next season. I just know that I’ll just take it a day at a time and try and improve.”
Newcastle are expected to assess goalkeeping options this summer, with Nick Pope aging and his backup, Aaron Ramsdale, in Tyneside only on a loan deal expiring in July.
