Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie (official title: “Chairman and CEO”) is being inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame this season, according to a team announcement.
Lurie will be formally honored at halftime of the Eagles’ Week 7 home game against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football.
His statement:
“Being selected to the Eagles Hall of Fame is one of the greatest honors of my life. It is truly rewarding to know that I will now join a distinguished group of legends who have all made significant
contributions to this organization. From the very moment I became owner, I have been deeply committed to delivering a champion – both on and off the field – that our fans and city can be proud of. This franchise has given so much to me and my family over the past 32 years, and for that, I will be forever grateful. I would like to thank the selection committee for their support and am humbled that they felt I was deserving of this recognition.”
There are a lot of bad owners in sports. Lurie is clearly not one of them. And the Eagles have two Super Bowl victories to evidence as much.
While many owners will merely talk about their commitment to winning, Lurie has put his money where his mouth is … literally. The Eagles have been one the NFL’s top spending team during his time in Philly. In addition to seeing strong on-field results, the Eagles are very active in the community (see: the Eagles Autism Foundation, among many other initiatives).
Lurie’s leadership is a huge reason why many Eagles fans can say they’re proud of their favorite football team and the success they’ve sustained for an extended period of time.
It does seem kind of funny to be inducting yourself into the team’s Hall of Fame that you own, but, hey, nobody can dispute that he deserves to be there. Lurie is one of the greatest figures in Eagles franchise history.
