It has been over a month since Germany crashed out of the World Cup in (a not so) spectacular fashion. Julian Nagelsmann was criticized for his erratic decisions with the team, setup, tactics, and everything in between. One of the primary points of contention was sticking with Leroy Sané despite the winger underperforming massively. Okan Buruk, Sané’s manager at Galatasaray, found it amusing that his player is being labeled as the poster boy for Germany’s disappointing campaign.
“Leroy is one of the
last players you could possibly single out as a scapegoat,” Buruk said (Sky Germany as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “In every game, he gave everything he had and worked incredibly hard for the team. Unfortunately, it has almost become fashionable to blame him. To be honest, I actually find it a bit amusing that people are now making Leroy Sané the scapegoat. He didn’t have a bad World Cup at all.”

Let’s say the former Manchester City and Bayern Munich winger did everything he could. However which way we can put it, what he did wasn’t enough. I’ll cut him some slack because he’s not the only one who contributed to the brutal elimination at the World Cup, but he’s far from what Die Mannschaft needed to make a deep run and for that he cannot be relied on when Jürgen Klopp gets to work.
