Germany’s second goal against Paraguay in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup by Jonathan Tah was disallowed after VAR intervention. It was a crucial point in the game that eventually saw Germany get eliminated. İlkay Gündoğan did not mince his words against the officiating despite some valid criticism of his nation’s performance.“
“Today’s team performance definitely doesn’t need any sugarcoating…but what the hell was that VAR decision? In the Premier League, they’d just give a weary smile over
something like that – especially taking back a decision. Of course, it was brutally disappointing too. Unfortunately, we failed to convince over 120 minutes ourselves,” posted Gündoğan via his X handle. Germany could have taken the lead in extra time with Tah’s goal and proceeded to win 2-1 had it not been for VAR.
Gündoğan who has made 82 appearances for Germany, featuring in two World Cups flagged a controversial decision in an important game. Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed had previously allowed plenty of roughhousing from the Paraguayan players. One instance in particular where Leon Goretzka was bear hugged from behind in the penalty box did not get called.
The VAR intervention and subsequent decision of foul seemed very soft in the context of this game. Moreover, Paraguay never stopped making excessively aggressive fouls even after Tah’s goal was disallowed. That combined with Germany’s elimination has made the officiating very controversial in the final result of the game.
