Newcastle United could face a fresh offer from veteran Jacob Murphy as Everton continues evaluating experienced Premier League additions ahead of the new season.
The Magpies winger has already been linked with a move to Merseyside this summer, and a new report suggests David Moyes remains interested as he weighs whether to submit a formal offer.
According to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, Moyes is considering a move for Murphy as he looks to balance youth
with experience in Everton’s squad.
“He’s out of contract next summer, and if I was going to be kind, I’d say it was justifying a blend of age and youth when you’ve got Hayden Hackney coming in and Tyrique George out there as well on the wing as well,” Wyness said.
Wyness revealed that Moyes is assessing Murphy’s personality and leadership qualities before deciding whether to pursue the Newcastle winger, whose contract expires at the end of the 2026-27 season. However, he added that Murphy is not currently Everton’s top priority, despite the club’s admiration for the 31-year-old.
“I don’t see it being the pressing need for Everton right now, but still it’s one that may work. It’s one that is perhaps down the pecking order in terms of real urgent need right now for Everton,” Wyness said.
Interest from the Toffees is not new. Earlier this month, Sky Sports’ Keith Downie reported that Everton was keen on signing Murphy as Newcastle weighed the futures of several senior players during a summer of significant squad changes.
Murphy has spent nine years at St. James’ Park since joining from Norwich City in 2017, making more than 200 appearances and playing an important role in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup-winning campaign before seeing his playing time reduced following Anthony Elanga’s arrival.
Everton has already strengthened its attacking options with the signing of Tyrique George from Chelsea, but Wyness believes Moyes still values Murphy’s Premier League experience as the club considers additional reinforcements.
With Murphy entering the final year of his contract and Newcastle continuing to reshape its squad and definitely looking to bring in a few players on the younger side of the scale, Wyness’ report isn’t entirely unbelievable and the coming weeks could determine whether Everton turns its long-standing interest into a formal approach.
