One of the first orders of business for the Tennessee Titans this offseason will be evaluating the players on their roster who are set to become free agents. You can see the full list of Titans who are set to hit free agency here. There isn’t a lot of meat on the bone there.
The most interesting one is Chig Okonkwo. We had really high hopes for Okonkwo when he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2022. He seemed like the perfect guy to fill in for Jonnu Smith, who had left the team in free agency
after the 2020 season. Okonkwo never became the blocker that Smith was, but he showed plenty of explosive play potential.
I always thought that the Titans didn’t use Chig enough. He has been one of the few guys on offense who could actually make an explosive play on offense the last few years. He has averaged just 68 targets per season in his 4 years with the team. With the players they have had around him for the last few years, it seems like that number should be closer to 80.
We don’t know what they are going to do in free agency and the draft, but it seems to me that they cannot afford to let a player who has big play potential get away. I’d offer him a 4-year contract in the $35-40 million range before he hits the market.
Do you think it is important to bring Chig back, and what contract would you be comfortable with them offering him to keep him from hitting the market?
