Newcastle United travels to the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday evening to face Everton in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, with a place in the quarterfinals at stake.
Matthias Jaissle’s side enters the match after beating Crystal Palace 2-0 on Sunday, their lone win in four matches. The result lifted Newcastle to eighth in the Premier League, two points outside the top five, while mostly cooling down Jaissle’s seat a bit.
The Magpies have reached this stage by defeating two Championship opponents,
beating West Bromwich Albion 3-2 at home before earning a 1-0 away victory over Millwall.
Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Lewis Miley are doubtful through illness and injury respectively, while Tino Livramento and Ewen Jaouen remain sidelined. Jaissle is expected to field a strong lineup, with Harvey Barnes and William Osula competing for starts after scoring against Palace.
Everton, meanwhile, enters the fixture following consecutive 2-0 Premier League defeats to Chelsea and Arsenal. David Moyes’s side had gone eight matches unbeaten across all competitions but has now slipped into the bottom half of the league table after those back-to-back defeats.
The Toffees advanced in the EFL Cup by defeating Preston 4-0 and Wolves 1-0 in the previous rounds. Jarrad Branthwaite is expected to miss out with a concussion, while Jack Grealish is doubtful through illness. Tyler Dibling, Michael Keane and Carlos Alcaraz could enter the starting lineup.

On Miley and Fernandez-Pardo’s availability…
“These two players are still doubtful. Question marks on if they can make it [for Thursday night]. We need to see step-by-step over the next two days to decide if they’re able to be in the squad or not.
“With both of them, we don’t want to take any additional risk and, hopefully, they are getting back soon.”
On team selection, with United facing Everton in the Premier League four days after their cup encounter…
“Due to the history for the club in that competition, I have the same approach – to play with the best possible line-up.
“We are getting huge support again in an away match. It is really special, during the week, that will we have 8,000 fans with us, taking the journey to support us.
“It shows the importance about that competition and we will also be aligned with that and go all in. The fans have huge expectations and they have that taste now with winning the competition.”
On the appointment of Tomás Amaral as the club’s new Head of First Team Recruitment…
“It’s always good to improve things and Ross [Wilson] is the responsible guy and leading that department. It’s always good for experts to have fresh energy and we’re looking forward to working together.
“Like it was in the last couple of days in the [summer] transfer window, it’s a pure and clear alignment between everyone involved.
“As a coach, you thrive for high expectations when it comes to signings.”
On Sunday’s win at Selhurst Park…
“We were doing the simple things a bit better in the second half. We emphasised, like always at half-time, the potential and what we can improve in our game.
“We had a more offensive mindset after ball wins and improved in possession with our structure. Now, it’s time to build on that. We have shown a solid performance and deserved that win.”
On Tino Livramento…
“I don’t want to put too much pressure on him but also the medical department. That is usually my approach when it comes to injuries.
“I can just assure you that I see him everyday with a great professionalism in his rehab, hard-working, so hopefully we have him back soon and that he is stable in his approach when he is joining us.”
On last night’s Under-21s win over Sunderland at St. James’ Park, with the young Magpies coming from behind twice to claim a 3-2 win…
“It was nice. First of all, I’m happy for the young lads getting the opportunity to feel and taste a little bit of that atmosphere.
“It should give them that vision of where they want to be in the future, playing in a full stadium. They did a great job.”
