Ian Rapoport, Mike Garafolo, and Adam Schefter reported that the New York Giants are considering San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones as an option after Jaxson Dart was recently ruled out for the rest of the regular season with a knee injury.
Former 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is among the quarterbacks the Giants are interested in. The other quarterbacks are Cardinals backup Gardner Minshew, J.J. McCarthy of the Vikings, and Justin Fields of the Chiefs.
Another former Niner, Brandon Allen,
is also in consideration. He was with New York during training camp.
Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy coached the Bears in 2021. He could have drafted Jones, but selected Fields instead. Based on how that went for Nagy, he might be more inclined to give Jones a shot — especially after how Mac played in 2025.
Garafolo said Jameis Winston’s performance today will help shape what the team does at the position in the coming days.
In fairness, the conditions at MetLife aren’t great on Sunday. Winston was 9-for-15 for 77 yards and took two sacks in the first half against the Titans.
John Lynch referenced the 49ers’ history at the position as a reason why he’d hold onto Jones. Brock Purdy looks like an MVP candidate through two weeks, but a season ago, the Niners needed Jones for half of the year.
