The Packers, their fans, and members of Bob Harlan’s family gathered in the Lambeau Field atrium Monday to remember Harlan’s life and career.
Credited as one of the men responsible for turning the Packers around in the 1990s, Harlan had no shortage of people willing to say good things about him. And that’s for two simple reasons: he did a lot of good for the Packers, and he seems to have been a genuinely good man.
Virtually everyone who spoke about Harlan mentioned his character first and his football
decisions second. To some extent, one may have been guided by the other; finding the right people to make smart decisions may have something to do with Harlan’s character, after all. But at the end of the day, he leaves a very compelling dual legacy, one worth reflecting on.
It’s good for Harlan to be remembered as one of the people who fixed the Packers. That was his job, and he did it well. The Packers are not the team they are today if Harlan isn’t a steady hand on the wheel. The foundation for Ted Thompson, Mike McCarthy, Aaron Rodgers, Brian Gutekunst, and Matt LaFleur was laid under Harlan, Ron Wolf, and Mike Holmgren.
But it’s even better that people will come out in droves to remember how Harlan made them feel as a person. Being good at your job is one thing. Being a person worth remembering is another.
