Like everyone else, former Bayern Munich and Germany star Lothar Matthäus can see that the Bavarians have been incredible for the majority of the season.
However, Matthäus thinks that the team could becoming
a bit complacent with things after a subpar first half against RB Leipzig in a 5-1 win on January 17th, a lackluster effort in a 2-0 win vs. Union Saint-Gilloise last Wednesday, and a 2-1 loss to FC Augsburg on Saturday.
“They’re lacking that final push. Maybe they’re too confident in the Bundesliga. On Wednesday in the Champions League, they also needed time to get going. They’re lacking that ease, and they need to get it back. They can do it, they know that. The difficult games are coming. But of course, you can see a bit of complacency,” Matthäus said. “Leipzig had 17 shots on goal last Saturday, this time 16. That hasn’t happened before on this scale for the opposition. From this point of view, they need to concentrate more on their game again and, above all, try to work against the ball so that the opposition doesn’t get these shots on goal like Augsburg or Leipzig last week.”
Matthäus is not wrong. There was a distinct lack of urgency in five of the last six halves of football over the last nine days. Hopefully, this is a brief “funk” and does not develop into a long-term mindset.
With Vincent Kompany at the helm, it would seem like a longshot for Bayern Munich to stay down for too long.
