At the beginning of the season, Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich was awarded the honor of the captaincy for Germany’s national team. Kimmich took over the reins from his Bayern teammate, Manuel Neuer. Kimmich’s tenure got off to a rocky start with an unprecedented 2-0 loss to Slovakia in FIFA World Cup Qualifying. Kimmich’s leadership put Germany back on track with three straight wins.
Earlier this week, Kimmich picked up an ankle injury and Julian Nagelsmann was forced to find a different player to assume
the captaincy duties for the Luxembourg match. Bayern’s Jonathan Tah was the obvious selection.
“It’s a big honor and means a lot to me,” said Tah (via @iMiaSanMia). “But it’s not about myself, it’s about qualifying for the World Cup. Nevertheless, I’m grateful to have lived this moment.”
Tah will be happy to hand the armband back to Kimmich for the crucial match on Monday against Slovakia. A win or draw will see Germany win Group A and automatically qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
