Heading into the 2026-27 season, Liverpool Women would have looked ahead to their first three games including the opener newly promoted Charlton, mid-table Tottenham, and defending FAWSL champions Manchester City and likely seen four points as the reasonable goal.
A 4-0 hammering of Charlton may have been a slightly better than expected way of getting to that and raised hopes for perhaps even more, but following a 1-1 draw with Spurs in week two the Women’s team is at least on track if the target
is to climb back into mid-table themselves.
There’s a solid case, though, that they deserved more than Sunday’s draw against their London opponents, and so manager Gareth Taylor is looking to take the positives from the match into training this week as he prepares his side to take on City next in a rare Friday kickoff.
“I’m really proud of the performance,” Taylor said following the match. “I felt we were the better team. We improved second half, but I still felt we were probably the team that were looking more likely in the first. I think where we’ve just come up short today is our final action.
“For the amount of play that we had, it felt in the second half that Tottenham really couldn’t get out of their half but only for a couple of moments. I’m really proud of the team and where we’ve taken it to now. I thought the goal was quality and I thought we could have had a penalty.”
Even if they do end up with four points to show for their first three games of the season, even that is a massive improvement on last season’s struggles—and that’s without touching on just how good the Reds have looked at times in pre-season and now early in the season.
“There are a lot of elements of our game today that we’re really satisfied with,” Taylor added. “Tottenham are a good team. They’re not going to give up the spaces easily and they wanted to be aggressive and change their press in the first half to try to stop us gaining so much ball.”
