Manchester United’s reported interest in Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall appears to be based on more than just his performances and ever-increasing value and appeal.
According to The Athletic’s Andy Mitten, there is a belief at Old Trafford that the defender would be open to making the move to Manchester, and that’s one of the main reasons the Red Devils are tracking him and willing to put on a bid for the Magpies left back.
Mitten confirmed Manchester United’s interest in strengthening at left-back,
calling it one their main priorities through the transfer window, and revealing the club views Hall as its No. 1 target for the position.
“United want a left-back,” Mitten said. “Cover for Luke Shaw, someone to push Luke Shaw, given that Luke Shaw may not be able to play as many games as United hope to play this season. United like Lewis Hall, the young left-back at Newcastle United.
“Manchester United would not be targeting players if they did not think they would want to come to Old Trafford.”
Hall enjoyed a breakout 2025-26 campaign, establishing himself as one of Newcastle’s standout performers with 45 appearances across all competitions, scoring one goal and assisting on two more, and emerging as one of England’s brightest young full-backs.
Hall remains under a long-term contract and became a cornerstone of Eddie Howe’s squad after arriving from Chelsea in 2023.
Even then, Mitten’s comments suggest United believes Hall would be receptive to a transfer, as reported earlier this summer, despite Newcastle giving no public indication the club would sanction another sale of a key player this summer — outside of the ongoing Bruno-Arsenal saga.
All things considered, Newcastle is unlikely to welcome approaches for another established first-team regular, let alone one without a legit backup waiting on the wings, after already losing several high-profile players.
Unless Hall himself pushes for a move or makes his preferences clear as Bruno did, the belief inside Old Trafford that he would be interested in them will not turn into a move for at least another year.
