Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano hosted his usual game week press conference ahead of this weekend’s pivotal matchup against Penn State.
Schiano opened up the press conference by not only stating the importance
of this game, but also by noting how their preparations for the game so far have been good.
The first question had to do with the challenges Penn State’s running game poses for the Scarlet Knights. Over the last few games, the Nittany Lions’ running game has come alive on the backs of Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, who have combined for 1,540 yards rushing on the year. Schiano talked about how tough that matchup will be for them, especially when factoring in how good their offensive line and tight ends are at blocking.
He was also asked a question about what types of challenges they are facing in game planning for Terry Smith, Penn State’s interim head coach, especially since they have limited game film on him. Schiano’ said that not much has been affected since they do have games to study since he took over, but that they need their scheme to be flexible so that they can adjust during the game.
One question that was asked later on in the press conference had to do with the snaps quarterback AJ Surace saw late in the game versus Ohio State, how important reps like that are for a young quarterback, and if he wishes that he got Surace more playing time.
Schiano responded with how he isn’t very concerned about that because of the other chances that Surace has had to develop.
Schiano also had the opportunity to talk about the progress of Eric O’Neill, who has made a significant impact these past few weeks. He talked about how he has become more comfortable in what they are doing and that they have tweaked some things on defense to play to his strengths.
