During the weekend, there were reports that longtime star quarterback Philip Rivers could get head-coaching interviews.
Monday, Rivers told reporters, he is open to coaching in the NFL and he is confident
in term of his knowledge of the game and his leadership skills that he could be an effective.
Are you listening, Tom Brady?
Brady and Raiders general manager John Spytek, who are leading the interview process to replace the fired Pete Carroll, should give Rivers a look in the process.
Rivers, 44, would be risky because he doesn’t have any coaching experience. But he’s extremely smart and he wouldn’t jump into something if he didn’t think he would succeed. Just look at his late-season comeback.
Brady and Rivers know each for being competitors for nearly two decades and Brady would likely be intrigued by the idea. The Athletic recently reported the Raiders were interest in energetic first-year head coaches. Rivers screams that description.
Also, Rivers could probably attract a good staff based on his relationship over the past 20-plus years.
Just for starters, Mike McCoy and Gus Bradley could be offensive and defensive coordinator candidates and there will be more.
Would it be a risk? Sure, but there is a higher reward here than the team’s last few coaching hires. Again, I’m not saying Rivers should be the top candidate, but the Raiders should look into him.
