On Friday, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced
the launch of the Awards of Character program. This new program is inspired by the Chicago Bears’ legendary running back, Walter “Sweetness” Payton, who was known for his character and recognized for his integrity both on and off the field. The Pro Football Hall of Fame has partnered with USA Today, Payton Productions, and Jarrett Payton to launch this new program, beginning in January of 2026.Per the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the purpose of this
program is to “recognize extraordinary individuals” who exhibit commendable core values such as integrity, respect, honesty, commitment, and courage. This program aims to honor and celebrate individuals who embody these characteristics in their daily lives, specifically firefighters, police officers, nurses, teachers, veterans, and coaches. These are the friends, family members, and colleagues that we know who “make a positive impact on their communities through their selfless service, dedication, and unwavering commitment to others.”
This announcement, which you can see below, included a video featuring Walter Payton’s children, Brittney and Jarrett Payton. “Role models come in all shapes and sizes. Dad was ours, like he was to millions of football fans around the world,” they state. In honor of their father, they hope to “celebrate the excellence of everyday heroes who shared [their] dad’s values.”
In this video, the Payton children encourage you to nominate someone you know who embodies these traits and inspires you through their character and the work that they do. There will be one winner every month throughout 2026, totaling 12 winners to be honored.
More information on the eligibility criteria for nominees and how to nominate someone today is located on the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s website.
