UFC heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall, has not yet recovered from the debilitating finger poke suffered at the hands of Ciryl Gane in their UFC 321 title fight last weekend in Abu Dhabi. Not only did
“Bon Gamin” force the bout into a “No Contest,” he also left Aspinall with no vision in his right eye.
For how long remains to be seen.
“We got an appointment yesterday morning with a friend of ours, who is one of the doctors from the UFC, and he got us a private appointment at Cheadle Hospital to see an eye specialist yesterday,“ Aspinall’s father said on YouTube. ”He kind of basically did the same as the guy that we saw over [in Abu Dhabi], said it’s bad, it’s not good. His eye is a little bit more closed than it was. Right eye, he still can’t see anything. Said it’s just grey. And they tested him on words, and he just couldn’t see anything. His left eye, 50 percent, he went down about four letters, and then couldn’t see the letters. So, one’s really, really blurry and one’s still not working.
I guess the decision to call the fight was pretty “smart” after all.
“Sometimes when your eyes heal like that, it can become displaced and stay there,” Aspinall continued. “And they did a few tests on that, and they said it doesn’t seem like that. And his vision on the eye that’s the best eye wasn’t following properly, so the muscles weren’t working strong enough to go this way, this one just wasn’t working that good at all. So, we’ve got to have additional tests further this week, and [they are] sorting the tests out for us, and he’s got to have a CT scan. See if the bones are all right, but they think the bones are all right.”
“Bones” certainly sounds all right, based on this tweet.
The fact that Aspinall is still experiencing significant vision loss means the promotion is unlikely to book the inevitable rematch until early 2026. I’m sure Gane is still “angry” over the way things ended at UFC 321, but maybe “Bon Gamin” needs to hire this longtime glove expert for his next training camp.
