On Sunday afternoon, the Kansas City Chiefs got their No. 2 wide receiver back against the Baltimore Ravens. After suffering a torn labrum on the third play of the season opener, Xavier Worthy returned
to his teammates for their Week 4 game on GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium — and played a big role in the team’s 37-20 victory. Worthy ended the day with five receptions (and two carries) for 121 yards — and Kansas City now moves into Week 5 with a 2-2 record.
First quarter
The Chiefs won the kickoff and deferred. Running back Justice Hill took Harrison Butker’s kick in front of the end zone and returned the ball to the Baltimore 30-yard line to start Lamar Jackson and the Ravens offense. The first two passes went to tight end Mark Andrews to move the chains. Derrick Henry’s first carry rumbled for 14 yards to the Chiefs’ 44-yard line. Jackson then found wideout Zay Flowers for a 21-yard gain. The Chiefs were able to get the Ravens to third-down two plays later, but Hill took a handoff for a first down at the Kansas City 12. Two plays later, Jackson found Hill for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Tyler Loop’s extra point opened the scoring at Ravens 7, Chiefs 0.
In his first NFL action after missing the first three games, rookie wideout Jalen Royals returned Loop’s kickoff to the Chiefs’ 32-yard line to start Patrick Mahomes and the offense. The first play went to another receiver returning from injury in Xavier Worthy. After no gain on the swing pass, the Ravens were called for a facemask penalty to move the ball to the Chiefs’ 47. The Chiefs appeared to stall after a short run by Isiah Pacheco and a short pass to Kelce set up third-and-2 just on the Baltimore side of the 50. Rookie running back Brashard Smith could not bring in the pass, but the Chiefs went to Worthy to convert on fourth down. Mahomes went right back to Smith, and the two connected for a 17-yard gain to the Ravens’ 24-yard line. The drive would stall, however, after only four more yards. Harrison Butker came on for a successful 38-yard field goal to trim the lead to Ravens 7, Chiefs 3
Running back Rasheen Ali returned Butker’s kickoff to the Ravens’ 26-yard line. Defensive tackle Jerry Tillery brought Jackson down for a three-yard loss on first down. Safety Jaden Hicks brought Andrews down for only a two-yard gain on the next play, setting up third-and-11, but Jackson was able to evade the rush and just scramble for the first down. After a downfield pass to former Chiefs receiver DeAndre Hopkins was negated by penalty, Jackson found Flowers to move past midfield, and an unnecessary roughness call on safety Bryan Cook would move the drive to Kansas City’s 32-yard line. On the next play, however, Jackson uncorked a deep pass to Andrews that fell into the hands of linebacker Leo Chenal. The Chiefs took possession at their own 16-yard line.
Mahomes picked up two yards on a first down scramble, before finding Worthy on second down for a 37-yard gain to the Ravens’ 45-yard line. After the two did not connect on the next play, Mahomes found Kelce for a seven-yard gain. The first quarter would come to an end with the Chiefs facing third-and-3 from the Baltimore 38-yard line.
Second quarter
Running back Kareem Hunt’s first carry fell just short of the mark, before the veteran kept the drive alive on fourth down. On first down from the 34-yard line, receiver Hollywood Brown’s first catch went for 16 yards. A short run by Hunt and a four-yard Mahomes scramble set up third-and-4 from the ten. Mahomes found Smith to set up first-and-goal from the four. The Chiefs would not be able to score the touchdown, unfortunately, with outstanding Ravens coverage in the end zone. Butker came on for a successful 23-yard field goal to narrow the deficit to Ravens 7, Chiefs 6.
After a holding penalty on the kickoff, the Ravens started at their own 15-yard line. Henry gained 11 yards on the drive’s first play. After a delay of game penalty, Henry found ten yards on a screen pass. The Ravens then saw a second delay of game call before Jackson was called for intentional grounding as George Karlaftis nearly brought him down back at the ten-yard line. The third-and-26 play to Hill gained only 11 yards, and Jordan Stout came on to punt for Baltimore. Nikko Remigio took the kick at the Chiefs’ 29-yard line — and returned it 15 yards to start the drive at the 44.
The first play was an end around to Worthy that advanced to the Baltimore 22-yard line. After a four-yard rush by Smith, Mahomes and Kelce connected to set up first-and-goal from the six. Two plays later, Mahomes threw a four-yard touchdown to JuJu-Smith Schuster. Butker’s extra point set Kansas City’s first lead at Chiefs 13, Ravens 7.
Hill returned Butker’s kickoff to the Baltimore 31-yard line, where the Ravens offense returned with 3:53 remaining in the first half. The Chiefs appeared to have held Baltimore to three-and-out, after safety Christian Roland-Wallace came out of the secondary to hold Jackson to nine yards on third-and-10. The Ravens chose to go for it, however, and Jackson was under heavy pressure from Karlaftis as he uncorked a deep pass that sailed incomplete. The Chiefs took over at Baltimore’s 41-yard line.
Mahomes and Worthy tried to find the end zone on first down, but the ball was overthrown. A 16-yard pass to Kelce on the next play moved the possession to the 25. A four-yard backfield pass to Smith brought the action to the two-minute warning. Mahomes was again incomplete to Worthy coming out of the break. On third-and-6, a scrambling Mahomes found Hunt for a 14-yard pass play to set up first-and-goal at the eight-yard line. Pacheco moved out of the backfield to catch Patrick Mahomes’ 250th career touchdown pass. Butker’s extra point extended Kansas City’s lead to Chiefs 20, Ravens 7.
A touchback on the kickoff would start the Ravens on their own 35 with 1:41 remaining in the half. Somehow, the half would go even worse. After the first two plays gained nine yards, on third-and-1, Jackson was sacked and fumbled. Kansas City took over at the Baltimore 47.
Worthy gained eight yards on a first down catch-and-run, and Hunt moved the chains two plays later. The Chiefs would miss their chance to blow the game open, however. The drive stalled at the 37-yard line, and Butker came on for a 56-yard field goal. The Ravens took over at their own 47.
Jackson started with a 16-yard run to the Kansas City 36. A pass to Andrews gained six more yards. Another two plays later set up a 43-yard field goal by Loop as time expired. The successful attempt made the halftime score Chiefs 20, Ravens 10.
Third quarter
Smith started the Chiefs’ offense at their own 35-yard line with a kickoff return. Runs by Worthy and Pacheco moved the chains, with a challenge ruling Pacheco made the line to gain. On the next play, Pacheco had maybe his best run of the season for 12 yards to the Baltimore 43-yard line. The next play was a 28-yard throw to Worthy that set up a first down at the Baltimore 15. After a four-yard Pacheco run, Mahomes and wideout Tyquan Thornton connected for the first time for an 11-yard touchdown. Butker’s extra point extended the lead to Chiefs 27, Ravens 10.
Hill returned Butker’s kickoff to the Baltimore 30 to start the Ravens’ first second-half drive. Runs by Henry and Jackson quickly gained a new set of downs. Jackson stepped out of a sack for a 24-yard pass to Rashad Bateman to the Chiefs’ 34. A throw to Flowers gained 15 more yards and entered the red zone. Two more Henry runs set up third-and-1 from the 12-yard line. Karlaftis brought Jackson down for a two-yard sack to set up a field goal. Loop’s 32-yard try was good, trimming the lead to Chiefs 27, Ravens 13.
Remigio took the kickoff and broke multiple tackles to bring the ball near midfield. Kelce and fellow tight end Noah Gray were immediately tackled, setting up a third-and-2 that Hunt easily converted. Two plays later, Smith-Schuster reeled in a 12-yard pass to the Baltimore 23. Mahomes and Smith-Schuster immediately connected again for 12 more yards to the 11. Penalties would then derail with an illegal formation and Mahomes making an illegal forward pass. On third-and-19 from the 20, Smith-Schuster found only eight yards. Butker came on for a successful 31-yard field goal to give Kansas City a three-score lead at Chiefs 30, Ravens 13.
After bobbling the kickoff, running back Rasheen Ali could only advance the kickoff to the 16-yard line. Instead of Lamar Jackson taking the field, journeyman backup Cooper Rush came on. Jackson was announced as questionable to return with a hamstring injury. The Chiefs quickly had Rush at third-and-6, before Charles Omenihu was called for an offsides to move them up five yards. The third quarter ended with the Ravens — behind the backup quarterback — facing third-and-1 from their own 25-yard line.
Fourth Quater
The Chiefs defense opened the final frame with Chris Jones stopping Henry for a one-yard loss to set up fourth down. Rush was then incomplete as the Ravens’ offense stayed on the field, giving the Chiefs the ball at the Baltimore 24.
Pacheco started with a five-yard gain before Mahomes was incomplete on second down. Pacheco could only gain three on third down. With everyone expected the Chiefs to settle for a 33-yard field goal, the Chiefs went for the kill shot. The offense stayed on, and Mahomes found Brown for a 15-yard touchdown — the quarterback’s first touchdown of the day. Butker’s extra point stretched the lead to Chiefs 37, Ravens 13.
Hill found the 33-yard line on the kickoff return. Rush and Flowers connected for seven yards on first down. The next two passes, however, fell incomplete. On fourth-and-3, Rush did connect with Flowers — who broke a tackle to move to the 46 for a first down. On the next play, Rush threw to Hill to move to the Chiefs’ 40. The Chiefs defense would get off the field on the next series. Flowers gained five yards on first down — but the next three plays went for no gain. Kansas City would take over at their own 35-yard line after a fourth down stop.
The Chiefs’ starting offense stayed on the field — and Hunt started with a six-yard run. After another short run, Mahomes threw to Worthy out of the backfield to move the chains. After two short Hunt runs, Pacheco came on for third down and narrowly missed the line to gain. Hunt converted on the next play to extend the drive. Mahomes was incomplete to Brown on first down. The Chiefs took a timeout, and Gardner Minshew was on the field at quarterback with the team returned to the field. Smith took the handoff for 12 yards and a first down — but tackle Wanya Morris was called for holding after coming on for Josh Simmons during the timeout. Smith gained a yard on second-and-20 before not gaining a yard on fourth down. Punter Matt Araiza entered the game for the first time with less than four minutes remaining in the game. Araiza’s kick went out of bounds at the Baltimore 13-yard.
Rush found a 14-yard throw to Tylan Wallace. On the next play, Hill took off against Kansas City’s backups for a 71-yard run. Loop’s extra point made the score Chiefs 37, Ravens 20. The touchdown brought the game to the two-minute warning.
The Ravens bypassed the onside kick, and Smith returned the ball to the Chiefs’ 22-yard line. Smith started with a five-yard run, and the Ravens declined to use their full allotment of timeouts. The next two plays would see Minshew kneel to run out the clock, evening the Chiefs’ record at 2-2. They would now find themselves only a game down in the AFC West standings after the Los Angeles Chargers shocking loss to the New York Giants earlier in the day. Kansas City is also a game up on the Las Vegas Raiders, who lost to the Chicago Bears in the NFL’s other 3:25 game to fall to 1-3. The Chiefs will end the weekend at least tied with the Denver Broncos —who also entered Week 4 at 1-2 and host the Cincinnati Bengals on “Monday Night Football.”
Special teams
Return man Nikko Remigio recorded a 47-yard kickoff return in the third quarter to start a Chiefs’ drive near midfield.
