It’s officially Juju time in Boulder.
During his weekly Tuesday press conference, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders dropped a bombshell, telling media members that five-star true freshman quarterback Juju Lewis will play against the Delaware Blue Hens.
“[Lewis] is gonna play, for sure,” Sanders said when asked if fans would see Colorado’s QB of the future on Saturday.
Lewis hails from Carrollton, Georgia, where he set numerous Georgia 6A high school football records. In three seasons with
Carrollton, Lewis passed for over 11,000 yards and 144 touchdowns. That level of production earned Lewis an offer from Lincoln Riley’s USC Trojans, which he’d initially commit to, but would eventually flip to play for Sanders and Colorado. After graduating high school a year early to get a head start with the Buffs, the 17-year-old will make his collegiate debut this weekend.
“I love that kid [Lewis],” Sanders said. “I really do. I want him to be successful. Sometimes, you don’t rush things. Sometimes, you don’t want to delay things. You want to make sure the timing is right. I don’t think the time for [Lewis to play] was appropriate last week, I really don’t, with the way the game was flowing. This week, I’ve made up my mind, I’m ready for it. [Lewis] is going to play.”
While Lewis will see the field in some capacity, Sanders made it very clear that this doesn’t mean that he’ll start for the Buffs on Saturday. Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter started CU’s week one matchup against Georgia Tech and tallied 202 yards of total offense with two total touchdowns. Salter is still expected to start against the Blue Hens, but Lewis will find his way into the game plan somehow.
Colorado fans can tune in to see a sneak peek at their future quarterback this Saturday, starting at 1:30 pm after the Buffs kick off against Delaware on Fox.
