Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund are in the midst of a key period for their respective careers in Bavaria per Abendzeitung.
Both will need to “prove” this summer that they should remain with Bayern Munich, which seems like a harsh assessment — but hey, this is life in the front office at Säbener Straße:
Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund have some exciting weeks ahead of them, especially since both need to prove themselves worthy of continued
employment. Their contracts expire in 2027, and it is currently unclear what the future holds for them. Their situations are set to be discussed at the next supervisory board meeting in August, though a decision is not expected until November. According to internal sources, the pool of suitable external sports managers is currently limited.
For CEO Dreesen, who also has a contract through 2027, the signs clearly point to an extension.
Both executives have done some good things in their time at Bayern Munich. For Freund, his focus has been on revamping the youth development pipeline and academy, which both seem to be in a good spot. If you wipe away his somewhat disastrous January 2024 winter transfer window performance, Freund is accomplishing what he was brought in to do.
In the midst of the awkward transition to Eberl, who could not immediately join FC Bayern, Freund led the winter transfer window in 2024 and dug himself a hole by overpaying significantly for Bryan Zaragoza and Sacha Boey, who both were questionable pickups at the time and — somehow — look even worse now. In fairness, though, Freund did get Eric Dier for free and ink Jonas Urbig as well.
As for Eberl, his talent identification and signings have been largely hailed as successes, but his handling of contract negotiations has put him under fire from the higher-ups.
The summer transfer window for both men is a proving ground…will they show their worth to the Bavarians? With the signings of Saibari and Brown, along with some of the early player sales, Eberl and Freund are on the right track.
