Floyd Mayweather made an appearance for press conference for his upcoming fight against Mike Zambidis on June 27, but naturally what most observers are more interested in is where things stand with a supposed rematch with Manny Pacquiao. It had been reported and even announced by Netflix that the rematch was on, but Mayweather threw some cold water on those reports by saying he still had outstanding issues with the deal, insisting the fight would be an exhibition as opposed to an actual fight.
Pacquiao
would come out to quickly clarify that the contracts both Mayweather and himself had signed for was for a professional boxing match, and during this conversation with boxing reporters Mayweather would intimate that a deal was nearing the finish line.
“Well, at this particular time I know everybody is going to ask questions about the Pacquiao fight,” Mayweather said. “Like I said, the sport of boxing has truly changed. We have a lot of new companies, lot of new faces, and Netflix, I truly believe we’ll get this done. We’re almost at the finish line to finish the Pacquiao fight, but a lot of things have changed in the sport of boxing and eventually I think within the next 48 hours the Pacquiao fight should be done.”
Mayweather and Pacquiao first met in a 2015 showdown, which wound up being the highest grossing boxing event of all time. Both fighters are over a decade older at this point and well past their primes (which many would argue was even the case back then) but the pair hope to rekindle the commercial magic later this year.
