After an emotionally charged match at Penn State on Thursday night, the Huskers now head to Maryland to play match 2 of 3 of their road trip. The Huskers hope to get another sweep on Saturday.
The team probably played their most dominant and emotional match of the season on Thursday when they entered Rec Hall. They weren’t met with any sort of kindness, but lots of animosity. Especially from the student section.
Penn State isn’t known for being the classiest of fan bases, but maybe we expected a little
more from them since they have lots of skeletons in the closet. We should thank their little white board sign of “More DUIs than Nattys” because this made an angry Harper Murray even angrier. She had her best match of the season too.
The Huskers have to put that all behind them though because they will be met by a hungry Maryland squad that just won their first conference match of the season on Thursday against Iowa.
Maryland Terrapins
2025 Record: 8-22
2025 Conference Record: 1-19 (B1G)
Last NCAA Tournament Appearance: 2005 (Lost to Louisville in 2nd Round)
Maryland joined the B1G Conference in 2014 which is the same year that Rutgers joined as well. They really entered a juggernaut in the volleyball world at the time, and still, and have had a little trouble making a name for themselves.
They have had some more success than Rutgers has had though. In the 12 seasons they have been apart of the B1G, they have had 5 overall winning seasons, but have not had a winning season in the B1G conference itself.
The closest they came was in 2018 when they went 9-11 in B1G matches. They even got a big win against #15 Michigan too.
Flash forward to 2025, Maryland had a rough go-around. They only won 8 games in total and had only 1 conference win too. Their one win came against Rutgers, which isn’t surprising since these two team are usually at the bottom of the B1G.
The Terrapins were picked to finish last in the conference this season which is not an improvement from last season as they were picked 16 of 18. Both Iowa and Rutgers were the teams picked below them last season, but both have improved since.
Maryland, along with most of the bottom teams in the conference, did not place anyone on the preseason team. The Terrapins top player in kills, right now, does have 3 more kills on the season than Harper Murray.
Freshman OH Ava Brown has had a breakout season in her first year at Maryland. She has 125 kills and is hitting .322%. She is also a top defender with 51 blocks, which is tied for first on the team.
The majority of Maryland’s offensive production, after Ava Brown, comes from two seniors on team who have both spent all 4 years at Maryland. OH Sydney Bryant and MB Eva Rohrbach both have 106 kills each this season. Rohrbach is hitting above .400% while Bryant is just above .250%.
Junior MB Duru Gokcen is the Terrapins other starting middle, who is tied with Ava Brown, with 51 blocks. She is also hitting at a high clip of .441% and has 70 kills.
Nebraska is expected to sweep the Terrapins and head on their merry way to Indiana for the finale of their roadtrip.
Tonights match is scheduled to begin at 6:00pm CST and will be streamed on B1G+. The football game should be over or just ending so don’t forget to tune in if you have a B1G+ subscription!
