France may have suffered a humiliating first 45 minutes in the World Cup 3rd place match against England, heading into the break 0-4 down, and have ultimately lost 4-6, but some of their players walked away with other consolation prizes. Michael Olise became the first player in World Cup history to reach 7 assists in one edition of the tournament, while the Bayern Munich player’s favorite partner Kylian Mbappé managed to (temporarily) eclipse Messi as the leading World Cup scorer in history. With his two goals in the second half against England, Kylian Mbappé has become—pending Sunday’s final—the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history.
Of course, Argentina’s Lionel Messi could immediately catch Mbappé in the World Cup final if he scores at least one goal. But, regardless of what happens in the final, one has to imagine that the former AS Monaco player, 12 years Messi’s junior, has time on his side to ensure he will beat out the Inter Miami player in the end.
Meanwhile, Bayern’s Harry Kane sits pretty on 14 goals in 5th place. If he makes it to another World Cup, as he has publicly admitted he aims to do, he could rise up the ranks even further.
