While the transfer rumor itself pays no attention to the time-space continuum, rolling on unbated in some form all year, the window for doing summer business (mercifully) closes today at 2 PM EDT. After Claudio Ranieri graciously stepped aside last spring after lifting the club from the relegation zone to the precipice of the Champions League, the club decided it was time for a fresh start, hiring Gian Piero Gasperini and Ricky Massara to lead the club into its next era.
On the pitch, things have
gone swimmingly for Gasperini and the Giallorossi so far, as the club is off to a perfect 2-0 start to the season. Off the pitch, well, that’s where things get tricky. Aside from Evan Ferguson, nearly every transfer Roma has managed this summer has been waylaid by loan formulas, agents’ fees, and, in the case of Jadon Sancho, players feigning interest only to change their mind two weeks later.
As a result, while the current roster has taken to Gasperini’s methods with aplomb, one can’t help but notice a few missing pieces, mostly notably on the left flank, where Stephan El Shaarawy has struggled to make his mark through two matches. Apart from finding a dynamic counterweight to Matías Soulé on the right, Gasperini has been pining after additional depth in midfield and a forward to complement Ferguson, in the event Artem Dovbyk is sold.
As we enter deadline day, Massara and Gasperini have reportedly concentrated their 11th-hour efforts on Chelsea winger Tyrique George, Bologna winger Benjamin Dominguez (a Plan B behind George), and a possible reunion with Monza midfielder Matteo Pessina.
So, stick with us as we follow these and any other last-minute rumors that spring up. And if you missed any of the transfer rumors this summer and want a good chuckle, we housed every single rumor right here—and those are just the ones that we had time for!
Overnight Updates:
Roma & Chelsea Working on Tyrique George
With the Artem Dovbyk for Santiago Giménez swap between Roma and AC Milan on ice (maybe, who really knows?), Massara isn’t wasting any time, continuing to work on a permanent deal for George, rumored to be in the €20 million range with a hefty sell-on percentage for Chelsea.
Or maybe not…
