We got four games on tap today! Yay! Who doesn’t love a jam-packed day of October baseball?
Kicking the day of games off will be the Seattle Mariners and the Detroit Tigers. These two teams split the first
two contests in Seattle, so now it’s Detroit with homefield advantage. The AL Central club can continue putting their epic second-half collapse by beating the Mariners, who will try to steal on in Detroit and force this series at a minimum back to Seattle. The Tigers will be going with former #1 overall pick Casey Mize for today’s Game 3, while Seattle has yet to announce their starting pitcher for the critical contest though all indications are that it’s going to be right-hander Logan Gilbert for the M’s. Stay tuned.
The second game we’ll all be treated to today will be that Brewers-Cubs series. After last night’s big win the Brew Crew find themselves just one win away from the NLCS while Chicago will hope being back home can help them flip the script. Milwaukee will be going with former 1st-rounder Quinn Priester, who found his first success in the majors this year in a starting role for the Brewers. Over 24 starts )plus five relief appearances), the 25-year-old had an impressive 3.32 ERA but he’ll be making his first playoff start tonight. With the Cubs’ season on the line and facing elimination, they’ll go with backend starting veteran Jameson Taillon, a veteran of nine seasons but who has just three career playoff appearances.
Next up, we head back to the American League with the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees taking on one another in Game 3. Toronto has absolutely demolished the Yankees over the first two games, outscoring the Bronx Bombers 23-8. New York has their back up against the wall with the offseason awaiting if they can’t squeak out a win this afternoon. Luckily for them they’ll have Carlos Rodon taking the ball. Rodon had a terrific season for the Yankees but has yet to find much postseason success. They’ll need a big performance on the mound if they want to see another day of October baseball. The Blue Jays have yet to officially announce their starting pitcher but it’ll likely going to be former Guardians ace Shane Bieber.
And wrapping up the fun day of playoff baseball will be the Los Angeles Dodgers versus the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 3 of their series. The Dodgers barely survived last night’s late rally to secure the 2-0 series lead. The Dodgers will turn to their expensive pitching investment to get them to the NLCS as Yoshinobu Yamamoto gets the call for Game 3 in LA. The Phillies have a tough task ahead of them needing to win three straight starting on the road, and will try to keep their playoff dreams alive with Aaron Nola on the mound. With their backs against the wall expect a desperate Phillies squad right out of the gate.
