Christoph Freund is not going to give away Bayern Munich’s plans for one of the most exciting young talents in England — but his comments on JJ Gabriel certainly raised some eyebrows.
The Bayern Munich sporting director was asked about reported interest in the 15-year-old, who has been generating significant attention because of his talent and potential.
Freund was careful not to confirm anything, but he also did not exactly dismiss the reports:
“I don’t speak about players who are under contract at
other clubs. We do know the player because he’s very talented. He’s an exceptional talent – I cannot say anything more about that,” Freund said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
That is about as close as Freund can probably get to acknowledging the player without opening himself — or Bayern Munich — up to questions about an active transfer pursuit.
The interesting part is the wording. Freund did not simply say that Bayern Munich does not comment on rumors. He specifically acknowledged that the club knows Gabriel and described him as an “exceptional talent.”
For a player this young, Bayern Munich would naturally have to think long-term. The club has increasingly placed an emphasis on identifying elite young talent early, and Gabriel appears to have caught the attention of several major clubs.
Nothing has been confirmed, but Freund’s comments make it clear that Bayern Munich is well aware of JJ Gabriel.
