Bayern Munich’s hiring of Julian Nagelsmann saw the Bavarians lay down one of the most expensive transfer fees of all time, paying around €25 million to prise the young manager away from Rasenballsport Leipzig back in 2021. The then-34-year-old manager was given a five year contract, one that should have ensured that Bayern would enjoy many years of continuity and peace with what was viewed as a very talented, very promising young manager after the controversial departure of sextuple winning manager Hansi
Flick.
That 5 year contract would have expired on June 30, 2026. How much five years can change things. The Bavarians, of course, fired Nagelsmann in one of the most bizarre firings in recent years — remember, the treble was in danger — and hired Thomas Tuchel. The former Chelsea FC boss, in turn, was fired in less than a year and Bayern are now on to the successor of Nagelsmann’s successor, Vincent Kompany. Nagelsmann, meanwhile, will lead Germany to the 2026 World Cup.
But it turns out that, while Bayern are done with Nagelsmann, they are not yet done paying for the transfer. Bayern Munich’s official english website announced a Telekom Cup match against Leipzig on August 15, 15:30 CET, that will take place just one week before the official start of the season in the DFL Supercup. A Telekom Match is just a glorified friendly, though, and, according to BILD, it is not one conceived purely to further improve the Bavarians’ match fitness.

Bayern are planning a friendly against RB Leipzig around mid August. This game is part of the compensation for Julian Nagelsmann’s move from Leipzig to Bayern in July 2021. At that time, the clubs agreed not only on a fee of up to €25m, but also on a friendly match, part of the proceeds of which are to go to Leipzig as further compensation.
Last year’s Telekom Cup match was played against Tottenham and was also a friendly match agreed to in a transfer deal, this time for Harry Kane. Perhaps, once this match has been played, Bayern will finally have gone through all their friendly debts.
