It’s only been a few days since Michael Malone was announced as UNC’s newest head coach, but the NBA title winner is well into the process of assembling his staff.
Chuck Martin, who spent the last two seasons on John Calipari’s staff at Arkansas, will reportedly be associate head coach for the Tar Heels. Martin coached with Malone at Manhattan during the 1999-2000 season and has had stops at 10 different programs since then, including a stint as head coach at Marist from 2008-2013. Notably, Martin was
Calipari’s recruiting coordinator at Kentucky during the 2023-24 season and the past two seasons at Arkansas. His sole recruiting class at Kentucky was ranked #2 in the nation, and both of his classes at Arkansas ranked in the top 10. Additionally, it’s been reported that Malone will retain current Carolina assistant coaches Sean May and Pat Sullivan as well as director of basketball operations Eric Hoots.
That brings us to our question of the day: How would you like to see Malone fill out the rest of his staff? Should he go for a heavily experienced coach like Martin, or a young coach with strong potential like Marcus Paige (who left UNC to join Wes Miller’s staff at Charlotte)? Should he try to bring in someone else with NBA experience, or should he focus solely on college coaches?
