Bayern Munich’s decision to bring in Nathaniel Brown has added an intriguing new storyline heading into the season. While Brown is still developing, his arrival gives Bayern another talented option at left-back and could create real competition for Alphonso Davies.
Per Sport1 journalist Stefan Kumberger (via @iMiaSanMia), one of Bayern Munich’s ambitions for signing Brown was to attempt to reinvigorate the Canadian star:
Bayern are hoping the signing of Nathaniel Brown will push Alphonso Davies to
rediscover his best level. A club source told @SPORT1: ‘Thankfully, the competition for places here is brutal’
The club’s management expects Davies to respond to the new situation on the pitch and permanently raise his performance level – provided he remains injury-free.
Even though the club would be willing to listen to exceptional offers for Davies this summer, it’s currently more likely that he will stay and get the chance to convince his critics at the club with consistent performances
For years, Davies has been one of the club’s most explosive players, using his pace and athleticism to change games on both ends of the pitch. However, injuries and inconsistent form have occasionally prevented him from reaching the incredibly high standards he set early in his Bayern career. With Brown now in the squad, Davies may no longer be able to assume that the starting role is automatically his.
Competition has often brought out the best in Bayern Munich players. The club has built its success on having multiple players capable of starting in every position, forcing everyone to perform at their highest level. If Brown pushes Davies in training and earns minutes during the season, it could motivate the Canadian to rediscover his very best form.
On the other hand, increased competition can sometimes have the opposite effect. If Brown develops quickly and begins taking significant playing time, questions about Davies’ long-term future could quickly emerge. Bayern has never been afraid to make difficult decisions when it believes a younger player is ready to take over.
What do you think? Will Nathaniel Brown’s arrival motivate Alphonso Davies to elevate his game, or could this signing eventually pave the way for the Canadian to leave Bayern Munich?
