The New York Giants have scheduled an interview with former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy.
The the interview, which was was first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN, is scheduled for next week.
McCarthy, 62, was most recently the coach of the Dallas Cowboys. He led them for five years, from 2020 to 2024, amassing records of 6-10, 12-5, 12-5, 12-5, and 7-10 with two division titles over that period. He had a 49-35 (.583) regular season record in Dallas and the Cowboys made
the playoffs three times under McCarthy, with one win and three losses.
The Cowboys chose to not renew his contract after 2024, instead promoting offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach.
McCarthy was previously coached the Packers from 2006 until he was fired in 2018. There he made the playoffs nine times and with a 125-77-2 regular season record (.618), with a 10-8 record in the playoffs.
McCarthy is known as one of the NFL’s main devotees of the West Coast Offense. His brand of the scheme relies heavily on short, quick, horizontal routes as an extension of the run game, as well as isolation routes on deeper passes. He updated his scheme with the Cowboys, dubbing it the “Texas Coast” offense and added more pre-snap motion and tempo to the offense.
McCarthy is one of the most experienced and successful coaches in the Giants’ search, but the team is casting a wide net.
The Giants will interview former Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski on Wednesday, are expected to interview former Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh as soon as that can be arranged. They have requested interviews with Denver Broncos’ defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, and Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. They also are said to have interest in former Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.
