You can’t make this up.
A week after confirming a big money move to Bayern Munich, Morocco attacking midfielder Ismael Saibari has come down with an apparent hamstring injury in their World Cup Round of 16 tie vs Canada. Just before the first hydration break, the 25-year-old went down clutching his thigh after another one of Canada’s relentless attacks. Physios were called onto the pitch, who proceeded to treat the player for several minutes before he was finally subbed off.
This is, of course, devastating
news for Morocco, for whom Saibari was one of their rising stars. As for Bayern Munich, an outcome like this is far from idea. A potential hamstring injury could take several months to heal, which would mean Saibari would miss the critical preseason period to get to know his new team and coach.
In financial terms, FIFA will cover the player’s salary for the duration of his injury. However the impact on Saibari’s start at Bayern Munich will be the one fans are most concerned about. Such a huge shame, as he was making waves in this tournament.
