Over four weeks, a few rookies have flashed for the Kansas City Chiefs, but none have impressed more than cornerback Mansoor Delane. He is arguably the team’s most valuable defensive player at the bye week, but he is also widely recognized as one of the top first-year players in the NFL — despite missing nearly all of Weeks 1 and 2.

The latest Kansas City Chiefs news
NFL defensive rookie rankings at quarter mark of 2026 season: Sonny Styles or Arvell Reese at No. 1? | NFL.com
No. 4: Mansoor Delane KC | CB
DRAFTED: Round 1, No. 6 overall
After Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson relocated to the Rams in March, the Chiefs aggressively pounced on Delane in April. Jumping up the draft board from No. 9 to No. 6, Kansas City selected the cornerback to immediately start opposite second-year pro Nohl Williams. That’s a tall task for a rookie in any defense, but it’s particularly challenging in Steve Spagnuolo’s scheme, given how much press-man coverage the vaunted DC likes to employ. Not a problem for this silky-smooth technician, who has played man at one of the highest rates in the league — 53.3%, per Next Gen Stats — yielding just a 68.2 passer rating against in the coverage, with an interception and three pass breakups over 14 targets.
Kansas City Chiefs Quarter-Season Awards | Athlon Sports
Defensive MVP: Drue Tranquill
It’s hard to find a winner for this award. The Chiefs defense has been up-and-down this season, with no huge standout individual performances. With that being said, Tranquill is a solid choice for this award four games in.
The veteran linebacker has done a little bit of everything for Steve Spagnuolo’s defense. He’s taken on a bigger role with Leo Chenal gone and played well. Tranquill has 29 total tackles, five tackles for loss, and two passes defended. He’s a key cog for this Chiefs defense.
Chiefs at the bye: Updated playoff odds, best rookie, breakout player | The Athletic
Key player who needs to improve: Chris Jones
Jones’ salary-cap number this season is nearly $45 million. That’s top-of-market money for a defensive tackle (by roughly $15 million, according to Over the Cap), and for that price, the Chiefs should be expecting top-end production from their star.
They’re not getting it … yet. Jones has no sacks through four games, but perhaps more worrying, per PFF, he’s tied for 50th in the NFL with 11 QB pressures.
Chiefs bye-week awards: The top players on the defense and special teams | The Kansas City Star
Top defensive player: Mansoor Delane
Votes: Mansoor Delane (3), George Karlaftis (2) Rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane made an instant impact in the NFL when he intercepted a pass from Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix on the third play of the season.
Unfortunately, Delane aggravated a shoulder injury on that play and was unable to return to action in that game, the season opener at Arrowhead. He also missed the Chiefs’ second game but played in wins over the Dolphins and Raiders.

Kansas City Chiefs Players Under Pressure Coming Out of Bye Week: Defense
S Alohi Gilman
Gilman is off to a struggling start to his Chiefs career. It’s only been four games, so perhaps he just needs more time to settle in. Hopefully that happens soon, because opposing quarterbacks have strongly attacked the deep middle portion of the field this season.
Gilman ranks 81st out of 93 safeties with a poor 45.2 grade from Pro Football Focus. He has 17 total tackles so far, and not a single pass defensed. With Chamarri Conner now back from injury, perhaps Gilman will be used more as a box safety.
Revamped defense plus Kenneth Walker III: How the Chiefs re-established themselves as a Super Bowl contender | CBS Sports
Kansas City is on pace for 259 pressures, according to TruMedia, which would be the team’s highest total in a decade. Last season, it generated a higher team pressure rate (39.2%), but that effort required more blitzes. Steve Spagnuolo’s defense is impacting the opposing quarterback without sending five-plus rushers as often, which takes some pressure off an entirely revamped secondary. The problem thus far has been finishing plays. Despite the uptick in pressure, Kansas City has just four sacks on the year, tied for the second-lowest in the NFL.

Cowboys’ Prescott irked by stadium worker’s callout after loss | ESPN
As Dak Prescott walked down a long hallway to the locker room after the Dallas Cowboys’ 24-16 loss to the previously winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he heard someone yell, “Embarrassing.”
It was a third-party contractor positioned just outside the players’ exit from the AT&T Stadium field.
“When he said it, I just happened to look at him, and at that point, he looked away,” Prescott said. “And when I turned my head back, he said something else. And so that’s the part that, just as a man or as just a person, feel free to speak your mind — just speak it. Don’t cower away from the reaction that you’re going to get.
Bucky Irving and rookie QB Jalon Daniels help Bucs beat sloppy Cowboys 24-16 | NBC Sports
Bucky Irving ran for a career-high 165 yards, including a 72-yard run to set up the touchdown that put Tampa Bay ahead for good, while scoring twice himself, and the Buccaneers beat the Dallas Cowboys 24-16 on Thursday night for their first win of the season.
Jalon Daniels threw a TD pass to Irving in the first half while directing a turnover-free offense amid several Dallas miscues in just the second start for the undrafted rookie.
Daniels, who was 19 of 25 for 189 yards, is filling in for Baker Mayfield, who’s expected to be sidelined at least one more game with a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand.
Through four weeks of the season, zero kickoff return touchdowns | Pro Football Talk
That continues a downward trend in kickoff return touchdowns that began before the 2024 adoption of the “dynamic kickoff” and hasn’t changed under the new rules, which have encouraged more returns but haven’t resulted in more big plays. There were only six kickoff return touchdowns all of last season, and seven in 2024. In 2023, the last season of the old kickoff rules, there were only four touchdown returns.

The Top 5 moments of the Chiefs’ 2026 season so far
Patrick Mahomes tells the world he is just fine
Since Mahomes was injured last December, he has been working toward opening night of the 2026 season. Grueling months of rehab led to the Chiefs’ opening salvo against the Denver Broncos on “Monday Night Football.”
Fans were nervous; Mahomes had fully participated in training camp but hadn’t seen any live reps in the preseason. Everyone held their breath when, on the first drive of the game, Mahomes didn’t just drop back to pass in the red zone—but began to actually run with the football. Mahomes scored a rushing touchdown, not once, but twice (the first score called back due to penalty) for the first touchdown of the Chiefs’ season.
