Prior to this evening’s game against the American League West’s Seattle Mariners, the Colorado Rockies announced a bevy of roster transactions.
Corner infielder Warming Bernabel and relievers Luis Peralta
and Zach Agnos have all been activated from the injured list.
Bernabel, 23, was placed on the 7-day injured list for a concussion after he collided with a metal netting pole at Dodger Stadium on September 8th.
The rookie made his major league debut earlier this season after Ryan McMahon was traded and Michael Toglia was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque. Largely playing first base, the former top prospect hit the ground running. Bernabel hit .311/.340/.544 with seven doubles, a triple, and four home runs through his first 24 games.
Bernabel went through a prolonged slump after starting hot, going just 1-for-32 from August 20th through September 5th. However, he had started to pull himself out of the hole. In his last two games before going on the injured list, Bernabel went 5-for-7.
Right-handed reliever Zach Agnos, 25, made his big league debut back in April and rattled off a strong first 16 career games. During that stretch he posted a 1.50 ERA over 18 innings and tallied four saves. His next stretch of games was less than kind. Following the death of his grandfather in early June, Agnos began to struggle on the mound. In his next 12 appearances he put up a 15.43 ERA over 11 2/3 innings with 14 walks to nine strikeouts.
Agnos has been on the injured list since late July when he left an outing against the Baltimore Orioles with an apparent elbow injury. Thankfully he avoided structural damage and is now able to return to pitch at least one more time before the season ends.
Left-handed reliever Luis Peralta, 24, has struggled immensely this year after a fantastic rookie campaign last season in which he gave up just one earned run over 15 appearances and 12 1/3 innings.
After posting a 7.56 ERA over his first nine appearances this season, Peralta was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque. There he continued to struggle with command and execution with a 9.09 ERA over 34 appearances.
Peralta was recalled in mid-August, and after a rough first outing where he failed to record an out and gave up three earned runs he appeared to find some rhythm. Peralta had five straight scoreless appearances before he began to struggle again. In his last three games, he gave up nine earned runs on eight hits—including two home runs—and walked five batters without recording a strikeout. He was then placed on the 15-day injured list with left hip inflammation.
There were three corresponding roster moves to make room on the active roster for Agnos, Peralta, and Bernabel.
Right-handed pitcher Roansy Contreras has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a right hand contusion, ending his season.
Contreras, 25, was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles earlier this season. In four appearances with the Rockies—his fourth club in two seasons—he gave up eight earned runs on nine hits—three of which were home runs—over 8 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.
The Rockies have also optioned catcher Drew Romo and left-handed reliever Ryan Rolison.
Romo (no. 24 PuRP), 24, has spent most of the season with Triple-A Albuquerque after a hand injury during spring training delayed his start to the season. During that time, Hunter Goodman seized the starting catcher job with an All-Star campaign while rookie Braxton Fulford (no. 27 PuRP) has settled into the backup role.
After hitting .264/.329/.409 in 60 games with the Isotopes, Romo was called up with September roster expansion. However, he rarely left the bench. Romo had just three at-bats—striking out three times—and only put on the catcher’s gear once as a defensive substitution.
Rolison, 28, has pitched a combined 72 innings between Triple-A and the big league club. That number represents the most work the former first round pick has had on the mound since 2021. Plagued by multiple injuries since then, the former high octane starter out of Ole Miss reinvented himself as a reliever last year.
Although he showed flashes of what once made him a top prospect, Rolison largely struggled in big league action. Acting in both short and long relief roles, Rolison posted a 7.02 ERA over 31 appearances and struck out 25 batters over 42 1/3 innings. He gave up 11 home runs.
The Rockies currently have a full 40-man roster with five games left in the season.
