The New England Patriots made a late-night move on Monday to fill one of the major needs on their roster. Alijah Vera-Tucker, one of the top left guards available in this year’s free agency, was brought aboard on a reported three-year contract.
Let’s put a grade on the signing based on everything we know so far. Disclaimer: the grades might be revised once more details about the contract become available.
Instant grades: Patriots sign G Alijah Vera-Tucker
Bernd Buchmasser: One of the biggest strengths for the Patriots offensive line early on in 2025
was its stability. In 11 of their first 12 games, they rolled out the same starting five and the results showed. Expecting similar availability from Vera-Tucker is optimistic. He is undoubtably talented and was drafted 14th overall for a reason in 2021, but his injury history is significant. The fact that he has played only 43 of 85 games and missed all of 2025 pushes his grade down, despite his starter qualities. | Grade: B-
Matt St. Jean: Vera-Tucker is a good player… when he’s on the field. PFF has graded him as an excellent run blocker across all four seasons of play, and he excelled as a pass blocker when he last played in 2024 as well. He has positional versatility with experience at every spot but center in the NFL. However, he has been in the NFL for five seasons and never played a full one. Vera-Tucker is recovering from a triceps injury that knocked him out for all of 2025 just before Week 1, his second season-ending triceps injury since entering the league. He also lost most of 2023 with an Achilles injury. Vera-Tucker has averaged 8.6 games played per season in the NFL, so the Patriots will have to continue to add to the offensive line to prepare for when he misses time. But when healthy, he should be an excellent fit at left guard. | Grade: C+
Pat Lane: The Patriots desperately needed a guard with starting level talent, and they got one with AVT. The problem is that he can’t stay healthy. When he’s healthy, he’s a solid player, who has shown the potential to be a very good player, but, injuries have simply derailed his career to this point. I would look for the Patriots to target guard in the draft as well, but this gives them a high-end option at LG, who makes their line even more athletic, if everything works out. | Grade: B–
