Philadelphia 76ers General Manager Daryl Morey was fired today after a six-year tenure with the team. The Sixers compiled a 270-212 record under Morey, reaching the playoffs five times. They were swept by the New York Knicks in the second round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs, however.
Despite the Morey firing, Philadelphia plans to retain Head Coach Nick Nurse.
Between 2012 and 2020, Morey served as General Manager of the Houston Rockets. They made the playoffs nine times under his watch.
Morey is known for
his statistics-crunching background and an emphasis on the NBA equivalent of Major League Baseball’s “Moneyball” tactics. Though his career has generally been viewed as successful, it has not been without controversy. Morey acquired star guard James Harden twice, once for each team he served. The public fallout following Harden’s stint with the 76ers was brutal, with Harden calling his GM a liar and vowing never to be a part of an organization Morey served. Morey also drew criticism from China for his stand in support of the 2019 protests in Hong Kong, causing a rift between the Chinese Basketball Association and the NBA.
Even so, Morey is often seen as one of the premium executives in the NBA, a recognizable name along with the likes of Sam Presti of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Pat Riley of the Miami Heat.
