Glock Purdy. Zero Dark Purdy. Brockness Monster. Mr Relevant. Those are just a few of the dozens of nicknames the internet has given San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.
Late last week, defensive coordinator Raheem Morris was giddy about the team intercepting Purdy during practice: “We got a Brock pick today. I let him know that right after practice. That was awesome. He’s going to be so mad at me for telling the media that, but you guys were there. That’s a big one.” Once one of the reporters
told Morris there was another one, he responded, “Was it two? Oh, I didn’t get a chance to brag.”
Morris was bragging as if those opportunities were few and far between. It led to him giving Purdy a new nickname:
“No, no, no. I wouldn’t say a lot. I mean, he is the layer king. He’s so accurate. I mean, he puts the ball in the right spot. He keeps the ball in his hands. He’s tortured me for years. And it’s so nice to be around him. It’s so refreshing to be around that whole group and the energy that they bring. Getting a chance to be nosy and go in there with those guys is always fun because you learn from Mick [Lombardi], you learn from Brock, Mac, all those guys that are in that room, and I enjoy going there and getting to be with those guys sometimes too.”
“Layer king” is fitting for the player we’re talking about.
Purdy is listed at 6’1″, but that might be on a good day. Purdy is on record saying he has a difficult time seeing his intended target due to the size of the players in front of him. He said that’s the case about 40 percent of the time. So it’s no surprise that he’s mastered the skill of layering the ball over the middle of the field.
Is this a nickname that’ll stick during the season and beyond? Or will another nickname for the 49ers franchise quarterback surface? Either way, “layer king” has some staying power.
