It was quite the tumultuous Wednesday night for those in the local sports media, as the University of Michigan announced it had fired head football coach Sherrone Moore. A lot more has happened since then, and there has been a lot of fake news being spread on social media.
In case you are just getting up to speed on everything or are hoping to find all the facts, here is what we know as of Thursday morning.
The firing
Moore was fired for cause, as the now ex-coach in Ann Arbor “engaged in an inappropriate relationship
with a staff member,” according to a statement by Athletics Director Warde Manuel, which was provided to Maize n Brew by a university spokesperson.
According to John U. Bacon, the person that submitted evidence is a university employee. That person “presented irrefutable documentation about Moore’s conduct to UM leaders (Wednesday) morning. The president and regents had seen enough, and Manuel fired him this afternoon.”
Additionally, a report from The Athletic details that the investigation “initially did not produce evidence of the relationship” and that the evidence needed to fire Moore “came to light in the last 24 hours.”
“According to a team source, most of Michigan’s staff learned of the coach’s firing when Manuel informed the team during a meeting,” The Athletic’s report reads. “Moore was in the building Wednesday but was not at that team meeting, according to the source.”
Moore ends his tenure with a 17-8 overall record and a 3-1 record against Michigan State and Ohio State. Biff Poggi has been named the interim head coach for the time being while the Wolverines work to find their next head coach — it is expected he will coach the team in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
The detainment and subsequent arrest
Around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, it was reported by ESPN’s Dan Wetzel that Moore was taken into police detainment by the Saline Police Department. He was eventually turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department “for investigation into potential charges” and was later booked at the Washtenaw County Jail.
According to a press release, the Pittsfield Township Police Department was dispatched to the 3000 block of Ann Arbor Saline Road at 4:10 p.m. — about a half hour before Michigan announced his firing — for reports of an alleged assault. Without naming Moore, the press release details that he was taken into custody and the review of charges is pending from the Washtenaw County Prosecutor. No further details were immediately available.
A couple final quick things
I just want to take a quick second to recognize Moore’s wife and children — as well as the players on the team — as they must all be devastated right now. I cannot imagine what they are all going through right now. There are a ton (again, a TON) of people affected by this incident. I’ll personally be thinking of those individuals today while more news is inevitably released.
Also, there has been a fake mugshot of Moore also floating around social media. Key word in that sentence: fake. That is some AI slop or something somebody made on Photoshop, so don’t fall for it if you see it. Bottom line — you can rely on Maize n Brew and other trustworthy media outlets to provide you with all the information you need. A lesson for all to not go to social media searching for news.
