Nebraska got some great news on Halloween when in-state standout Ben Ziola out of Omaha Skutt Catholic flipped his commitment from North Carolina to the Huskers.
The younger brother of redshirt freshman Cade Ziola — Nebraska’s starter at heavyweight this year — Ben Ziola is arguably the best prospect in the state of Nebraska. A three-time Class B state champion for Skutt, Ben Ziola will be in search of his fourth state crown before heading
to Lincoln next fall.
A guy who has been steadily getting bigger, Ben Ziola plans to wrestle at 184 pounds in college. In high school, he’s won state titles at 106 (freshman), 126 (So.) and 150 pounds (Jr.) — he’s set to compete at 175 during his senior season for the Skyhawks.
A very tight knit family that is a huge part of Nebraska wrestling, the Ziolas bring a lot of fire to the program. Joining Cade in Lincoln, we could see multiple years of those two anchoring the Huskers in the upper weights.
As for how he fits in Nebraska’s plans, the Huskers will have a major need at 184 pounds next season after Penn State transfer Lucas Cochran graduates. Nebraska does have junior Ethan DeLeon, sophomore Marco Christiansen and true freshman Tad Forsyth there now as well, but the competition at 184 will be wide open next season, so Ben Ziola will have every opportunity to win the job as a true freshman.
