With the offseason news that both the SEC and ACC will be moving to a 9-game conference schedule starting in 2026, there have been some understandable questions about what that means for U of L’s future non-conference scheduling.
Both leagues are requiring their member programs to play at least one non-conference game against a fellow power conference opponent. With both Josh Heird and Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart recently reaffirming their desire for the Battle for the Governor’s Cup
to continue, it would seem like the annual matchup between the Cards and the Cats will continue unaffected.
But what about the other non-conference games Louisville has on the books in the years to come?
The Cardinals are currently scheduled to host Georgia in 2026 and then make a return trip to Athens a year later. In 2028, U of L is set to open its season on the road against Texas A&M before hosting the Aggies in the 2029 season opener.

With Georgia already having a built-in annual rivalry game against the ACC’s Georgia Tech, as well as a scheduled game at Florida State in 2027, there have been some understandable concerns from the Louisville fan base that UGA — for the second time this century — might opt out of scheduled games against U of L.
During his weekly coaches show on Wednesday night, Cardinal head coach Jeff Brohm added some fuel to those worries.
“I don’t know if I’m supposed to say,” Brohm began. “We want to play Georgia. We’ve gathered some information where that’s — you know, I don’t want to speak out of turn — but I don’t know if it’s vice-versa. I’m hopeful that we can play the game, but I don’t know where that’s at right now.”
Brohm reiterated his desire to play the toughest schedule possible. In the past, he has stated that he wished Louisville could play only power conference opponents, and expressed his disappointment that both Tennessee and Ole Miss passed on opportunities to play games against U of L.
I’m gonna go ahead and say it: UGA ain’t gonna play us. This was predictable the moment the SEC scheduling news was announced, and I hate it.
Would love to be wrong here and for the Dawgs to come to town next September, but that ball is in their court.
