Being 4-0 down in a two-legged tie hasn’t been a barrier to Barca progressing in competitions before now, though the chances of a remontada against Atleti was always going to be a tall order
.That said, Hansi Flick remained positive in all his pre-match dealings, and well he might, given that the Catalans had won all 13 of their games at home in 2025/26.
In the calendar year alone, the five matches played had all been won by three goals, so if Barca were to get an early goal or two, clearly that would
open up the possibilities.
Let’s take a look at three talking points from the game…
Barca did as Flick said they would
When you’re 4-0 down in a two-legged tie, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the game was already over as a contest, but Flick was never going to allow his players to go down with a whimper.
The way in which Barca set about their task was exactly in keeping with the coach’s pre-match narrative, and supporters can ask for no more from players.
Forcing Atleti into a back six at times tells you all you need to know about the intensity displayed against a very, very good Rojiblanco side.
Even in defeat, every player can hold their heads high.
Props to Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin
In a game with so much at stake, and with Eric Garcia – arguably one of the most consistent performers this season – missing, a lot of responsibility to keep Atleti at bay fell on the shoulders of Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin.
Not only did we see another super Cubarsi performance, but Martin also deserves the plaudits for keeping the likes of Julian Alvarez, Antoine Griezmann, Giuliano Simeone and Ademola Lookman at bay.
Bernal’s star continues to shine
With Frenkie de Jong not involved, this game presented Marc Bernal with another opportunity to impress, and he didn’t disappoint.
The youngster displayed his usual calmness and authority in possession, whilst also proving to be a handful as a supplementary attacking presence.
His confidence on the ball, even in the tightest of midfield spaces, belies his tender years, and his was another performance of real maturity.
