Missouri volleyball’s first SEC road trip of the season exposed a problem the Tigers have been dealing with all season. Mizzou left Oxford and Baton Rouge without a win, falling to Ole Miss 3-1 Friday before dropping a five-set heartbreaker to LSU on Sunday, moving to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in SEC play.
The two losses came in different ways, but the result was the same for Mizzou. Against Ole Miss, the Tigers were unable to sustain their attack late in sets, hitting .212 for the match while the Rebels
finished at .216. Mizzou led the third set of the match and won it 25-20, Ole Miss responded by holding the Tigers to eight kills and eight errors in the fourth set to close out the victory.
Paige Felder continued to provide a steady offensive presence against Ole Miss, finishing with 13 kills on a .321 hitting percentage. Grace O’Reilly added 11 kills, while Kimani Johnson and Lydia Stahley each contributed seven, but the Tigers struggled to create enough separation when the match tightened. Ainoah Cruz also recorded 19 digs, while Nina Mandovic and Sierra Dudley combined for 41 assists as Mizzou repeatedly tried to keep pace with Ole Miss.
The LSU match showed how close Mizzou can be on the road, but it also showed how difficult it has been for the Tigers to finish. Mizzou opened with a 25-17 win and later forced a deciding fifth set by taking the fourth 25-20, only for LSU to prevail 15-12. Johnson led Mizzou with 15 kills, O’Reilly had 13 and Stahley recorded 10, while Tia Phinezy produced a career-high seven kills and six blocks.
Despite the loss, Mizzou’s offense found a better rhythm against LSU, recording 62 kills and hitting .244 compared with LSU’s .203. The Tigers also continued to receive strong defensive efforts, collecting 65 digs with Mandovic recording a season-high 15 and Cruz and Dudley adding 14 apiece.
Now, Mizzou returns to Hearnes Center with an opportunity to change the direction of its season. Florida visits Columbia Friday, giving the Tigers a chance to turn home-court advantage into the consistency they could not find on the road. After two road losses decided by narrow margins, Mizzou needs to translate its strong stretches into complete matches before another SEC road test arrives.
The Tigers have shown they can compete with conference opponents. The next step is proving they can finish them, particularly away from home.
The Fifth Set will be back Friday previewing Florida and Auburn. First Serve will be back Monday recapping the two home games.
