The Indianapolis Colts announced on Wednesday that the team has placed starting veteran cornerback Charvarius Ward on injured reserve, who suffered his third concussion of the season.
While such a roster move means that Ward will be out for the remainder of the 2025 regular season, he likely will have to perform his own contemplation with his family on whether he wants to continue his playing career, given the reoccurring head injuries. Ward needs to focus on his health first and foremost.
The Colts
also announced that they have signed placekicker Blake Grupe and quarterback Brett Rypien from the team’s practice squad. Grupe will serve as their starting kicker for a consecutive week, having gone a perfect 2 for 2 from field goal range, and converted his only extra point attempt during last weekend’s loss in Jacksonville.
Meanwhile, Rypien will likely serve as additional backup quarterback depth as either the Colts QB2 or QB3, depending on whether rookie quarterback Riley Leonard (knee) is available for Sunday’s road game in Seattle. Rypien has converted 98 of 168 pass attempts for 950 total passing yards, 4 passing touchdowns, and 9 interceptions during 11 career games (4 starts).
The Colts also signed Jimmy Morrissey to the team’s practice squad. The former 2021 7th round pick of the Las Vegas Raiders has also spent time with the Houston Texans, New York Giants, and now, the Colts organization. Morrissey appeared in 14 games (4 starts) for the Texans from 2021-2023.
Lastly, the Colts made official the signing of since retired longtime veteran quarterback Philip Rivers to their practice squad. Rivers is putting back on the helmet and pads for what presumably looks like his last pro ride in the hopes of catapulting the Colts back into the playoffs down the season’s final stretch.
He could start as soon as this Sunday against a notoriously stingy Seattle Seahawks defense for his 2025 debut.
