Last month, when the Las Vegas Raiders moved away from coach Pete Carroll after one season, general manager John Spytek said the team had a “massive opportunity” ahead of it.
And he’s exactly right.
The Raiders are putting their future in the hands of new head coach Klint Kubiak and are expected to pair him with No. 1 overall pick, quarterback Fernando Mendoza of Indiana. If the Raiders, are finally going to find some stability and, ultimately, success it will be because of Kubiak and Mendoza.
They
have both, of course, proven they can win. They are both currently sitting on the football mountain top. Kubiak comes to Las Vegas after being the offensive coordinator of the Super Bowl-winning Seattle Seahawks. Mendoza, the Heisman Trophy winner, led the Hosiers to their first ever national championship and a perfect season.
Now, it’s time for these to lead the Raiders to a turn around.
There, of course, is no guarantee Kubiak will be a successful head coach and it’s it’s no sure thing Mendoza’s game will translate to NFL success. But they have a chance They have an opportunity.
Kubiak was one of the more highly-sought after coaches in this 10-hire cycle, while Mendoza is the clear-cut best quarterback prospect available in the draft. The Raiders aren’t getting scraps this time around. They’re getting quality figures at the two most important positions on the team.
They have opportunity to change the course of this franchise. And, at this point, that’s all they can ask for after so many years of failure and disappointment.
