After the Phillies’ disastrous eleventh inning on Wednesday, I hope you weren’t looking for good news from the farm system. The Phillies’ affiliates had a similarly bad day on Wednesday with all four teams suffering defeats.
Rochester 10, Lehigh Valley 1
It was a bad game for both the IronPigs’ offense and pitching staff on Wednesday. Starting pitcher Chuck King was fine at first, giving up two runs over the first four innings, but things unraveled in the fifth. The first five batters of the inning reached base and eventually
scored. Max Lazar also fared poorly in relief, giving up two runs in one inning.
Offensively, the ‘Pigs recorded ten hits, but due to going 0-10 with runners in scoring position, they only got one run home, thanks to a Robert Moore solo home run in the seventh.
Richmond 6, Reading 5
A ninth inning comeback fell just short as the Fightin’ Phils lost to the Flying Squirrels. Starting pitcher Jean Cabrera put the team in an early hole, giving up three runs in the second. But he largely settled down after that, allowing three total runs in five innings. Unfortunately, Jack Dallas furthered the deficit to 6-1 by giving up three runs in the eighth.
The F-Phils almost came back in the ninth. Pedro Leon had an RBI single and then Raylin Heredia launched a two-run home run to get within one run, but that was as close as they’d come.
Tampa 6, Clearwater 1
The Threshers got off to a great start thanks to Jonathan Hogart leading off the game with his 15th home run. Sadly, that was not predictive of how the rest of the game would go.
Starting pitcher Brad Pacheco gave up four runs over five innings then reliever Giussepe Velasquez followed him and gave up two more. The Threshers’ offense only had four more hits (two of them infield singles) after Hogart’s shot. Five batters walked, but due to going 0-8 with runners in scoring position, none of them scored.
Frederick 10, Jersey Shore 9
The BlueClaws fell behind 6-0 by the fourth inning, with starting pitcher Cade Obermueller responsible for all the runs. Reliever Brandon Beckel didn’t fare much better, giving up three runs in his three innings, and the ‘Claws found themselves trailing 9-3 in the seventh.
The ‘Claws responded with a six-run inning to tie things up. Several of the runs were products of miscues by the Keys, but Kodey Shojinaga had an RBI double, and Dante Stuart chipped in an RBI single.
The comeback proved for naught when reliever Gabe Craig gave up a run in the top of the ninth, and the ‘Claws stranded the tying run on second in the bottom of the inning.
